ISLAND COMMUNICATIONS CASE STUDY

Sea Spray Resort- Elbow Cay, Bahamas
January 2008

BACKGROUND:

About twenty minutes over the water, across from Marsh Harbour in the Island Nation of the Bahamas, Sea Spray Resort & Marina sits on Elbow Cay at the southernmost tip of White Sound Harbour. Sea Spray Resort & Marina comprises six acres of well-kept grounds nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sea of Abaco. The Village of Hope Town with it's New England-style ambiance and 120-foot tall peppermint-striped lighthouse, is a popular Abaco attraction. Two narrow roads circle the village and adjoining harbour, offering scenes of an enduring past-saltbox cottages, white picket fences, flower gardens-perfect for a walking or bicycling tour.

ISSUE:

The Sea Spray Resort and Marina needed a simple cost effective solution for distributing voice and data streams to each of the resorts 8 charming 3 bedroom 2 bath villas as well as its 60 Slip On Premise Marina. The resort needed to also implement an Internet and VoIP usage accounting program to adequately bill guests for usage.

SOLUTION:

The system would need to include an upgrade of its existing Satellite Network and a distribution mechanism for delivering coverage at multiple points of access throughout the resort. Skylink's Remote Island Broadband™ offered the owner the flexibility the owners needed. The "Base Island Development" Package offered by Skylink, became the central communications center for the Resort.

The Remote Island Broadband™ network was exactly what Sea Spray needed to deliver Voice and Data to each building on the compound. It included a 1.8 Meter Dish with a 4 Watt Buc for primary Internet Access at the Marina and Cottages while a 1.2 Meter Dish with a 4 Watt Buc would be uses primarily by the Resorts Central Office on the compound. In addition, the network includes a single High Power Wireless Access Point with a 1 watt amp. The antenna's small size helps to facilitate creative installation locations that preserve the natural aesthetics of each building. Also Included in the Network were multiple Wireless Access Points and Set Top Subscriber Units for each Cottage.

The overall system allowed the Owners and Operators of the Sea Spray Resort to accomplish their goal of distributing Voice and Data streams directly to multiple points throughout the island while allowing the office to more effectively manage island communications and call billing for valuable guests. The system even provided a WiFI network for on vessel broadband access while docked at the Sea Spray Marina.
